30 IR stars in 30 days: Vincent Tse of China Resources Beer

To celebrate 30 years of IR Magazine, our series highlights the achievements of 30 IR stars from the last three decades

IR Magazine has a long history of honoring those men, women and companies around the world that excel at investor relations. In celebration of 30 years of IR Magazine, we selected 30 IR stars that have shone particularly brightly over the past three decades and will be posting one profile each day for 30 days.

As well as being featured in our 30 IR stars series, Vincent Tse of China Resources Beer also heads up IR at one of the 10 companies to be named best in sector in the Global Top 50. The consumer staples giant won two awards – for best corporate governance & disclosure and best IR in the consumer staples sector – at last year’s IR Magazine Awards – Greater China after taking home five trophies in 2017.

Tse says that, as an inquisitive character, he finds that positivity and enthusiasm for the story are some of the most important ingredients in his IR program. ‘One has to repeat a story many times,’ he says – particularly after each results announcement. These characteristics in an IRO, says Tse, prepare you ‘for the huge amount of questions generated by the different angles of your story’, while being inquisitive helps with the two-way dialogue so essential to IR.

The right attitude ‘can soften a tough conversation [and] help with pushy clients who think they have the right to know every single entry in the ledger, or the unfortunate few who bought at the wrong time,’ he adds. Tse is obviously a man very happy with his IR career – which is no surprise given the accolades he has collected in recent years. ‘A happy day is easier than a sad day,’ he says. ‘So try to make it a happy one!’

Stay tuned for more IR stars this week and pick up a copy of the winter issue of IR Magazine to see the full list.

A version of this article was published in the winter 2018 issue of IR Magazine – the 30th anniversary issue of the industry’s premier publication.
