A trio of Canadian companies – Aecon Group, Agnico Eagle Mines and Stantec – have emerged as the most decorated firms at this year’s IR Magazine Awards – Canada.
The event, held at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York last night, honored excellence in the IR community across Canada with an evening of fine food, drink and merrymaking.
But it was Aecon Group that ended the night as the most recognized company of the evening, as the small-cap construction and infrastructure firm took home four trophies, including best overall investor relations (small cap) and best investor relations officer (small cap) for senior vice president of corporate development and IR Adam Borgatti. It also won the awards for best ESG reporting (small cap) and the best use of social media and video.

There were three awards apiece for Agnico Eagle Mines and Stantec. The former scooped the gong for best overall investor relations (large cap) alongside recognition for CEO Ammar Al-Joundi and CFO Jamie Porter in the best IR by a senior management team (large cap) award and the best in sector award for materials companies.
Engineering consultancy firm Stantec, meanwhile, took home awards for best overall investor relations (mid-cap), best IR in the industrials sector and best IR by a senior management team (mid-cap) for CEO Gord Johnston and CFO Theresa Jang.
Elsewhere, Canadian Pacific Kansas City’s vice president of capital markets and treasurer Chris de Bruyn was named best investor relations officer (large cap) and Alamos Gold’s senior vice president of investor relations Scott Parsons picked up the trophy for best investor relations officer (mid-cap).
The other honors were spread out among many more of Canada’s leading issuers, with Restaurant Brands International, Intact Financial Corporation and Cenovus Energy each securing a pair of trophies. The latter’s investor relations specialist Pamela Bremer was named this year’s rising star.
The IR Magazine Awards – Canada 2024 are split into two distinct types. First, awards-by-research categories are decided by a survey of portfolio managers, buy-side analysts and sell-side analysts covering Canadian companies, who select the winners for best overall IR, best IRO, best IR by a senior management team and best in sector.
Second, awards-by-nomination categories cover a range of IR practice areas, such as annual reports, ESG reporting, investor meetings, use of technology and crisis management. Companies can submit entries for the different awards, with the winners chosen by a panel of expert judges. This year’s panel of judges who helped determine the awards-by-nomination categories are:
- Brian Christie, former vice president of IR at Agnico Eagle Mines
- Lorne Gorber, senior adviser and Quebec lead at LodeRock
- Colleen Johnston, former CFO at TD Bank
- Tim Human, senior reporter at IR Magazine.
